The Loving Spoonful, Inc.
The Loving Spoonful, Inc. began as a small, unified voice founded by a group of five individuals, all whom faced the challenge of fighting HIV by personal experience. Today, that small voice has grown to embrace program participants in the provision of over 20,000 meals during a program year. Since its inception in 1992, the Loving Spoonful, Inc. has remained constant in the extension of services to the community of the entire Coastal Bend regardless of race, color, creed, religious beliefs, national origin, veteran status, age, disability or sexual orientation. Through existing grants, private donations and individual volunteer commitment, the Loving Spoonful has provided valuable services to fill a need that would otherwise remain unmet. The Loving Spoonful, Inc. commits its resources and sole concerns to advocate for and to protect the rights and dignity of all persons living with HIV and AIDS. The Loving Spoonful, Inc. remains constant in its commitment to extend available and healthful food service, both congregate and home delivery, to those persons living with HIV and AIDS who are in need throughout the Coastal Bend. Our Mission
The mission of the Loving Spoonful, Inc. is to promote self-empowerment of persons with HIV/AIDS. This is accomplished through four different modes:
In addition to the services we provide, free on-site meals, home delivered meals and food pantry, the Loving Spoonful is involved in other special events. The “Christmas in July” fundraiser provides school clothes and supplies for children infected and affected by HIV/AIDS in the Coastal Bend area. Last years event raised over $12,000.00 and provided for 90 children. Also, the Loving Spoonful hosts the local observance of the International AIDS Candlelight Memorial, which is held each year around the world. Supporting Us
The Loving Spoonful provided 20,751 service deliveries to 120 clients last year. The operating coast for 2003-2004 fiscal year was in excess of $100,000.00. The Loving Spoonful receives grant monies to support 52% of the operation. The remainder of the operating cost is obtained through fundraisers and private and corporate donations. The Loving Spoonful is always looking for new money through grants to support the operating coast. In this day of competitive grants with less money and more agencies competing for those grants, it gets more difficult to obtain money to keep up with the demand for services. But the Loving Spoonful stands fast that as long as the services are needed the agencies will be here for the HIV/AIDS community. Employees and volunteers work together to achieve the goals of the Loving Spoonful. Two full time employees and one part time employee are employed by Loving Spoonful. The executive director, James Brown, is a full time position and is responsible for the overall running of the agency. This position requires the execution of numerous duties including but not limited to fiscal management, personnel management, volunteer coordination, events planning, fundraising, grant writing, monthly and quarterly reports, and client intakes. The lead cook, Robin Murray, is a full time position requiring the planning of meals, ordering of supplies, cooking of meals, overseeing cook staff and volunteers and some office duties. The cook, Geneva Green, is a part time position requiring the preparation of meals and assuring the facility is clean. The Loving Spoonful also depends greatly on its volunteers. We currently have five regular volunteers and can have as many as fifteen volunteers in a quarter. Loving Spoonful is governed by a diverse board made up of eight men and women who are knowledgeable to the needs of the HIV community.
