On Cancer

A few weeks ago my friend, Dawn, told me she was going to create this website. I became excited. Finally, a website that would showcase gay businesses in Corpus Christi. When she told me she was giving me a column, I was ecstatic. I was going to have a forum to discuss important social issues. For example... why do butch girls always think you want their women? I quickly began to form an inventory of ideas in my head, like . . . why are drag queens prettier than me?

As this site started becoming a reality, it occured to me that I would need a subject worthy of a premiere column. For days now, I have been racking my brain . . . saying over and over to myself, "what is worthy?" . . . "what is worthy?"

Then, this week something happened. A dear friend has been diagnosed with cancer. I realize that she is going to need lots of love and support. That was when it hit me...I should dedicate my first column to my friend, Sylvia and her lover, Jennifer. I should ask readers for their prayers. I should ask them to reach down into their spiritual selves and bring forward positive thoughts and energy. I should ask them to dance. I should ask them to dance with such magnitude of power and grace that God himself comes down and says . . . "Wow, that's some dance!".

I happen to be a horrible dancer, so I will do something much more simple. I will say a little prayer. I will light a candle and I will think of my girls. As I move about my house doing chores, I will get a whiff of the sweet vanilla fragrance and I will be brought back to them. As the sun sets and the tiny flame casts huge shadows on my bedroom wall, I will think of the enormous amount they are loved. The wax will melt and slowly disappear and I will remember their everlasting faith. When it is time to replace that candle . . . I will. I will replace that candle over and over again, because it will remind me of their unyielding strength.

Yes, I will dedicate this to you, Sylvia, and to you, Jennifer, because you are worthy . . . at least . . . as I see it.
